An LLM citation is a reference or link used by an AI answer to support, attribute or extend what it says. Earning one is less about inserting a special tag and more about publishing information that is discoverable, specific and worth relying on.

Start with a question worth answering

Broad topics attract broad competition. Begin with questions that sit close to real expertise and customer decisions. A useful answer should resolve the question directly, then provide the evidence, context and limitations a reader needs.

Make the answer easy to extract without making it shallow

Use a descriptive title, a concise opening answer, logical headings and consistent terminology. Tables, steps and definitions can clarify complex information, but the page still needs depth and judgement.

Show why the source should be trusted

  • Identify the organisation responsible for the information.
  • State when facts were checked or updated where freshness matters.
  • Explain the basis for recommendations.
  • Link to primary evidence and authoritative sources.
  • Describe limitations instead of disguising uncertainty.

Strengthen the entity around the page

AI systems do not evaluate a paragraph in isolation. Consistent service descriptions, locations, business profiles, reviews and credible third-party mentions help establish what the organisation is and whether the claim fits its known expertise.

Remove access barriers

Important content should be available in the rendered HTML, linked from the site and not accidentally blocked from crawling or indexing. Heavy client-side rendering, orphaned pages and contradictory canonicals can weaken discoverability.

Schema can clarify an entity or relationship. It cannot manufacture expertise, evidence or trust.

Avoid citation-chasing tactics

Mass-produced pages, invented statistics, fake expertise and repetitive keyword variants may create volume without source-worthiness. They also increase the risk that incorrect information is repeated.

Monitor with care

Track a stable set of commercially relevant questions, capture the cited sources and note changes over time. Where a platform provides a link, connect the visit to analytics and genuine enquiry evidence. Treat absence of a visible citation as partial observation, not proof that a source was never used.
